Reading People Is Not As Straightforward As You Think

This month's guest is Lena Sisco - a former Naval Intelligence and a Marine Corps certified interrogator who served in the Global War on Terror

Hi and sunny greetings in Spring!

Yes, it is that time of the month again! We have a new episode alert for you.

This month’s guest is Lena Sisco - a former Naval Intelligence and a Marine Corps certified interrogator who served in the Global War on Terror.

Lena works with the Department of Defense, government agencies, law enforcement, special forces and the private sector training them in interrogation, statement analysis, body language, detecting deception, elicitation, as well as change leadership. I mean… say no more, right? Okay, just one more intriguing fact… Lena was an expert witness on the Emmy-nominated court TV show for three seasons!

In short, her wealth of experience is priceless, and we are excited to share it with you.

Let's dive right into it!

Communication Secrets Podcast

We welcome Lena Sisco together with our host Angela Podolsky - a behavior analyst and nonverbal communication expert to the ‘Communication Secrets’ podcast as they dive into the art of mastering rapport, cultivating trust, and nurturing meaningful conversations, whether in the intense terror interrogations or in the dynamic world of business.

Discover the critical role that self-awareness plays in deciphering human behavior and unraveling deception.

“If you are so focused about this conversation you're having in your head, you cannot be present for the conversation you're having with another human.”

- Lena Sisco

Lena revealed: “In all my trainings, I always start with the core, the first ingredient - Awareness. One part of the self awareness is - the Voice In Your Head and the importance of quieting that voice. You know, the voice that says “What am I gonna ask next? What do they think of me?” Blah, blah, blah, and on and on…”

Only when you are able to stop it, only then you can truly grasp (hear) both communication modes: verbal and nonverbal of the person you are speaking with. By doing it, you will be able to get the insights of the individuals' preferences, comforts, motivations. Unawareness of those, however, leads to missed opportunities, unfruitful conversations, and potential loss of valuable business opportunities - and who would like that?

Lena also shared with us that the art of an engaging dialogue which fosters a safe and trusting atmosphere is crucial, as it encourages individuals to open up and confide in you even when the truth might be uncomfortable, embarrassing, incriminating, or incredibly difficult to express.

The summary of Lena Sisco’s 4 crucial rapport BUILD steps - full description in the podcast episode:

  1. Establish a connection and find common ground: Get to know the person, make them like you, and earn their trust. Utilize the "similar to me" bias and shared interests to create instant rapport.

  2. Plan conversation topics: Determine the subjects you want to discuss and think about how to transition between them.

  3. Ask specific questions: Ensure you gather the necessary information that will be important for your decision making by writing down relevant questions.

  4. End positively: Wrap up the conversation by revisiting rapport, leaving a favorable impression that encourages future interactions.

OUR MISSION is to close the gap of what we were not taught in schools but are expected to know as we grow up!
